The tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was first published in 1905 and has been a firm favourite ever since. The story is about a small child called Lucie who loses a pinafore and her handkerchieves and she goes out looking for them. As she looks high up on a hill she sees some white clothes lying on the grass.
She climbs up the hill and finds a strange little washerwoman, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. This little washerwoman had Lucie’s handkerchieves all freshly laundered, as well as many other interesting items such as stockings for a hen!
Among the other peculiarities about the washwoman, she was wearing an excessive number of hair pins, all it seemed, sticking the wrong end out. Lucie helps Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle deliver laundry to the local residents and eventually all that is left is lucie’s missing handkerchieves and pinny.
She wants to thank Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, but all that she sees is a hedgehog running down the path. Lucie is left wondering if Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was just a hedgehog!
